Matthias Van Der Haegen
Biography
Matthias Van Der Haegen is guest lecturer at the Free University of Brussels. Matthias studied law at Ghent University (2009-2014) and at Hofstra University in the US as an exchange student (2012). In July 2015, he obtained the degree of Magister Juris at Oxford University and started his doctoral research later that year as a PhD Fellow of the FWO at Ghent University, under the guidance of prof. dr. Dirk Heirbaut and prof. dr. Piet Taelman. In May 2019, Matthias defended his PhD thesis on the role of the Court of Cassation, Belgium’s highest judicial court.
He joined Maastricht University as Assistant Professor in Digital Legal Studies the following summer. At Maastricht, Matthias was part of the Law & Tech Lab and conducted research on the use of AI in court proceedings. In the academic year 2020-2021, he was also guest lecturer in legal history at Ghent University.
Matthias combines his part-time academic work with his judicial traineeship within the Belgian judiciary. He (co-)authored several legal publications in the field of civil procedure, law & technology and legal history.
