Prof. Dr. Fabienne Brison
Biografie
Fabienne Brison is a member of the Brussels Bar Association since 1988 and a Partner, member of the Intellectual Property & IT law department, at Pierstone Brussels (see professional experience infra).
She is also a Professor at two major Belgian universities : Vrije Universiteit Brussels since 1999 and at KU Leuven since 1998 (see academic experience infra).
Fabienne is a native Dutch speaker and is fluent in French and English.
Professional experience:
Fabienne specializes in copyright, media law and new technologies and defends in particular the interests of right holders, but also works regularly in the field of trademark and design law. She has conducted numerous high level proceedings, but also assists her clients in negotiating and drafting agreements, advising them on both the legal-technical and strategic aspects. Fabienne is a recognized CEPANI third-party decision-maker for domain name disputes and a recognized CEPANI mediator for ICT disputes.
She is regularly ranked in well-known legal directories such as Chambers & Partners, Legal 500 and World Trademark Review.
Before joining Pierstone, she was one of the founding partners of HOYNG ROKH MONEGIER (2011-2025), partner at HOWREY (2006-2010), of counsel with NautaDutilh (2000-2006) and deputy to the director general of SABAM, collective management organization for copyright (1996-1999).
Academic experience:
Fabienne teaches courses in intellectual property law, media law and legal aspects of new technologies at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. She also gives a course on neighbouring rights in the advanced master in IP and IT law at the KU Leuven.
As a researcher, she carried out several research mandates in the field of copyright and neighbouring rights at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (1988-1995). She had a Stipendium to go to the Max Planck Institüt für ausländisches und internationales Patent-, Urheber und Wettbewerbsrecht in Münich, Germany (1993), was a visiting scholar at the Columbia University Law School in New York, USA (2006) and a visiting professor in the context of the Erasmus exchange program in Lapland (2007).
Extracurricular experience:
Fabienne is an expert appointed to the “Council for Intellectual Property” (Copyright and Neighboring Rights Section, advisory body to the competent minister), she is also the Secretary General of the “Association Littéraire et Artistique Internationale” (ALAI) and Vice-President of the Belgian ALAI group (ABA-BVA), and now also Editor-in-Chief of the specialized legal journal “Authors & Media”.
She is a member of several other professional associations, such as BMM, AIPPI and IAEL.
She is the author of numerous articles and books on copyright and is a regular speaker at national and international meetings (see publications infra).
Education:
Fabienne graduated in law at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (1987), obtained a diploma in advanced studies in literary, artistic and industrial property at Université Panthéon Paris II (1988) and holds a PhD in Law from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (1998).
