The first Italian national seminar of SPLIT – Strengthening Practice and Learning through Interactive Training will take place on 21–22 September 2026 at the Scuola Superiore della Magistratura (SSM), Naples premises, at Castel Capuano. The seminar is organised within the European Training Cycle under the title “Digitalizzazione della giustizia, tutela giurisdizionale effettiva e accesso inclusivo”.
SPLIT is an EU-funded project coordinated by Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and aimed at strengthening the digital capacity of justice professionals across Europe. Over its 36-month duration, the project develops training activities addressing the digital transformation of justice across the fields of fundamental rights, civil law and criminal law, with particular attention to effective judicial protection, inclusive access to justice, data protection, digital judicial cooperation and the development of digital skills among justice professionals.
The Naples seminar will focus in particular on the opportunities and challenges associated with digitalisation and the use of Artificial Intelligence in the justice sector. Over the two days, judges, lawyers, bailiffs and academics will engage with issues including AI in judicial decision-making, generative AI and legal reasoning, responsibility in the judicial use of AI, decision hygiene, data protection and anonymisation, judicial databases, and the relationship between technological innovation and human-centred adjudication.
The programme combines expert presentations with interactive workshops in mixed professional groups, reflecting SPLIT’s practice-oriented training methodology and its emphasis on interdisciplinary exchange between different actors in the justice system. The seminar will therefore provide an opportunity not only to examine the legal and institutional implications of emerging technologies, but also to discuss how they can be integrated into judicial practice while preserving fundamental rights, effective judicial protection and inclusive access to justice.
The event forms part of SPLIT’s broader objective of supporting a digitally proficient European judicial community capable of navigating and shaping the ongoing digital transformation of justice.
